What's wrong with my boat trolling motor on my bass?

I bought a used 16 'bass boat with a three MotorGuide 727 trolling motor with 24 pounds Thrust. The motor is 12 volts and about 1985 was returned from. When I put the motor in the water, it will run at full speed for about 5 seconds and then shut off completely. I have about a minute or so wait before it will respond again. The person who sold me the boat firmly wired to the motor directly to the battery trolling. I mention this only because an employee is a newer model engine guide and said that his has a plug that connects to a port on the front of the boat. Trolling the battery is fully charged (I I connected it and it to a charger to ensure that it was full). I suspect that somehow the motor draws too many amps or something and the engine is shutdown as a safety measure to avoid damage. Buy Any ideas would be appreciated (other than 'a new trolling motor).

The first thing I would do is a power switch in the system. Then, as mentioned above is a bit hot and it shuts down. Look under the pedal and check All connections to ensure that there is no corrosion, and they are tight. could also check spots, what to look hot, black spots on the plugs. You can then you may need to take a seat and some saw it, I know how to up there on the engine and check the things but not sure how to tell someone else to do it carefully and a few feathers. But you have kind of short, after a while he gets hot and loses contact and the motor stops, cools down and starts again. Check all visible holes, corrosion and leaks. Good luck
